We are a homeschooling family who will be moving to Ft. Lee in the spring.  We have been overseas for 6 years now so, will be having a culture shock in reverse!  Any advice on good places to live, go to church, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Re: From Stuttgart, Germany to Ft. Lee, VA

I know nothing about home schooling but I do know about the area. The one place you want to stay away from is Petersburg. It is a very ruff area full of gangs and drugs. Not a very good area for kids. The best area in my opinion is Colonial Heights. It is nice there. There is a mall and alot of other shops and nice resturants. We were back there visiting friends over the summer and it has built up alot since we were there but Petersburg hasnt changed a bit. Well actually our friends said it has gotten alot worse. Hope this helped you out some.

Cristina,

I saw that you are in Stuttgart and was wondering if I could get your opinion on a couple of things?

(1) What is the housing really like at Patch or Robinson Barracks? Do the units have washer and dryers in them or is it a washroom in the basement for the building?

(2) Do you live on or off post? And if I choose to live off base what areas would you recommend?

I'm going to come to Stuttgart first, when my husband retires on June 1 he will join me with our four year old daughter and two dogs (one large and one small). I put in my housing application as soon as I was notified of the assignment and currently I'm number 18 on the list. Since I will be arriving in April (which is before the big PCS move time) I doubt I will get base housing within 60 days. I would love to live off base but I hate paying all those expenses out of pocket but the more I look at the floor plans --it just looks really small. I currently live in military housing and have a 2000 sq foot townhouse with a fenced yard (which I consider perfect for housing).

We will be putting a lot of stuff in long term storage (we learned the last time stationed at Ramstein and bought all that nice big furniture from Belgium) to go light....

Any insight would be deeply appreciated.
