I am trying so hard to breastfeed my daughter, I was only able to breastfeed my son for the first month b4 i started to dry up! I've been doing really well with my daughter until now, my breast are getting extremely dry and chapped and have stared to split open! It's gotten so bad that they were bleeding today and i could feed her at all, I had to give her some formula! I wanted to know if anyone has some idea of what I can do b/c lanolin and Gerber brand breast balm aren't working!

Re: Help!! Breastfeeding trouble!

Are you leaving your nipples exposed to air for a little while after feeding? Also how is her latch it sounds as if she may not be taking in enough of the nipple (which can cause the problems you are having). I had the same problem with my son who still refuses to latch well. If you aren't opposed to giving a bottle try pumping when it hurts to bad to have her latch. That way you keep up your supply and she still gets breastmilk. Contact new parent support or WIC overseas and talk to one of their Lactation Consultants.

I feel bad for you because I know how painful breastfeeding can be at times. I used Vitamin E when my nipples started getting really dry. I cut the capsules open and rubbed the liquid on my nipples.  It really helped.

Re: Help!! Breastfeeding trouble!

Hi. I too had a hard time. My daughter didn't gain enough weight after she was born and I had to supplement. I'm still not able to get her up to 100% breast milk - but anything they get is good! She won't nurse any more but I pump every 3 hours or so and we feed her by bottle.  It helps me a lot to heat before and after I pump. My nipples get sore and have bled too - but I love Lanisoh cream.

If you're having trouble with production...try Mother's Milk tea. I have NO IDEA how...but it works. Here's where you can find it: http://www.traditionalmedicinals.com/MothersMilk

I wish you the best of luck and hope things get better!

Re: Help!! Breastfeeding trouble!

She's probably getting enough nipple, but not enough areola in her mouth when she latches. If it hurts when she latches, take her off and try again. You shouldn't nurse until you are healed, until then you should pump to keep the supply going and to keep her on your milk. Don't worry, it's ok!

Re: Help!! Breastfeeding trouble!

Get a Nipple Cap, ( German Pharmacy/ Apotheke will sell you: STILLHUETCHEN) its a very thin plasticthing that goes over your nipple. Works sooooooo awsome! No more Pain and its so much easier for Baby to latch on! Unfortunately i dont make enough milk, i have tried everything!!!! SO now i breastfeed and supplement with about two bottles a day. Works good for me.

Re: Help!! Breastfeeding trouble!

I'm not sure about the skin dryness, but for not producing enough milk, a friend of mine had that problem and it turned out she wasn't getting enough calorie intake herself so then she couldn't produce enough breastmilk.  Once she started eating more she started producing more milk.
