Doulas: Helping Military Moms

I just read this story about doulas and how they help military wives give birth. Very important help, especially for those women with deployed husbands and family back home or just simply far away. It's great that some of these doulas are military wives themselves. Has anybody here had the experience of giving birth with a doula by her side?

I have one child, and had several Doulas by my side during the process of labor and delivery. My husband was deployed and only got to come home for the birth, so he didn't get any benefit from childbirth classes. This is the main reason I chose to have a Doula. The hospital I was at was not military, but it did provide volunteer Doulas. My labor was so long that I ended up with 3 shifts of young ladies coming in to help out! I would not have another baby without a Doula, though I do suggest that you get to know your Doula first if you can. The ones I had were great, but we didn't get to meet before hand so we weren't able to talk much about what would be helpful, etc. for me. My husband was a super help during my labor and delivery, but even he says we won't birth again without one!
I'm currently pregnant and just met with my doula for the first time. She's fantastic already! She answers all my questions and even has a lending library of books and videos for her clients. I already feel at ease knowing she will be there for the birth of my first baby.

A postpartum doula can be very helpful when you have Postpartum Depression. Just having a knowledgeable doula present to help you feel like you know what you are doing can make a world of difference. The help of a Postpartum Doula can give you that nap you need, the help with lactation and knowledge about infant health not to mention knowledge about new mommy health that you need to get that "boost" into mommy-hood.

And that is so important since so many military spouses are alone when giving birth and the months after. Away from family members, and many times, away from even their husbands, it's nice having someone to turn to. Dealing with having a child by yourself is hard, someone that can give you expert advice can make such a big difference.
I so wish in italy where i am at they had some but i dont know if they do or dont i have been asking around but know one seems to be helping out any.
