I'm expecting our first child, due late August. Hubby's mom has just offered to buy a new stroller for me, which is great- now I just need to figure out what I need!

My husband did say he wants us to get a car, so I'm thinking a travel system, but we do also want multiple children so I don't know how feasible that would be. I also intend to do some travelling around Europe a bit after he deploys, so something that would stand up to that, that would travel well on trains and such, would be great. I intend to have it purchased before moving to Germany, I just need some suggestions as I'm totally lost!

Re: Baby strollers- HELP!!

I have used a Graco SnugRide car seat that snaps into a Graco stroller.  For an infant, that is surely the best way to go, in my opinion.  You can easily take a sleeping baby from car to stroller without having to disturb them.  Graco has had good safety ratings.  You don't have to buy the "Travel System" you can get the carseat and stroller seperate -- I did this and it saved me about $100 dollars b/c the stroller was on sale and I got to use a coupon on the carseat.  I suggest the book Best Baby Bargains.  I'm sure it's been updated since I bought it, but each edition will go through every piece of equipment (from wipes right on up to mattresses, etc.)  you can think of needing, rates the major brands on an A to F scale and tells about features of the brands.   This was a super helpful book for me.  I think they have a website, too.  Another word of advise, I love having a good bar/tray  in the front of our stroller.  we are in Italy now and when we're out in the markets or traveling around town I've found I like my son having the extra protection from the crowds.  Good Luck!  Feel free to send me a message via this website if you have any other questions!

Re: Baby strollers- HELP!!

I guess many moms may disagree with me but in my opinion the travelsystems are not necessarily the best for newborns. Yes, I bet it is comfortable to just take the seat and click it on the stroller BUT I have to say it is more important to me to have my baby laying flat while taking walks than the comfort of attaching the seat to the stroller. I guess it all depends on how much you walk as well. I walk a lot. I would say at least 1 -2 hrs IN THE FIELD (no,not on grass...LOL) therefore I prefer a pramstroller with AIRTIRES since there are occassionally smaller stones or bumps on the way. I mean if your only walk is 5-10 min through the mall or store ...I guess the travelsystem won't hurt but I wouldn't go for it..........BUT as I said - that's just my personal opinion.

Re: Baby strollers- HELP!!

I have/use the Graco travel system.  I love mine.  I love the cup holders and tray for Mom and Dad at the top and the cup holder and tray for her.  Well I love it now that she can finally use it.  :oP

For walking newborn and up we have a JEEP jogging stroller so she could lay back completely or sit upright, it's a really nice investment but probably one that you and your husband would want to make on your own after baby is born to see if it fits your new lifestyle in Germany.  We do a lot of walking so it works for shopping in our village and going to the park.

I would ask your MIL to buy the practical one.  Car seat and stroller.  You can always use the stroller.  As for which one to get... Look on popular baby websites.  I looked on Babies R Us and looked at ALL the strollers but I changed the view to see the highest rated strollers to the least.  So I was able to look at what people were buying and liked and from there, look for one that I liked.  Read the reviews then made a decision.

Asking friends and/or keeping an eye out when at the mall or grocery store you might see a lot that are the same and then ask the mom what it is and if she likes it.  Best of luck!

Re: Baby strollers- HELP!!

I have the travel system as well by Gracco. It's a life saver for me since Im not able to lift very much at all and I just basically unclick the carrier from the base and sit in right on the stroller. With this system it helps you keep an eye on your baby as well as lets you talk to them while you are walking and allows them to see your face. My daughter likes to sit up so it worked out great for me. If she is laying down she wakes right up so yeah, it's great. My father offered to buy a stroller as well and he never did and had I not of went ahead and got the stroller it would have been out of stock for my baby's early arrival. So in the end you have to do what you feel is correct no matter how many of us mom's tell you what works for our baby it may not work for yours, but I really do say give it a try and if it's not working out you can always go with just the stroller without the attached carrier. Hope this helps! Congrats on the new baby to be and good luck to you!

Re: Baby strollers- HELP!!

I got a Baby Jogger City Select.  I love it because you can have just one seat in it or two.  It's also not bulky like the double strollers you see in the BX.  You can also get a bassinet, hook car seats in, etc.

I have to agree with S Smith- infants shouldn't be in a car seat for extended periods of time.  Their developing backs need to be flat.

This stroller also turns easily, fits on the narrow European sidewalks and folds really flat for a double stroller.  It also fits in with the European strollers so I know I won't automatically get pegged as an American :)

Re: Baby strollers- HELP!!

Some parents who intend to buy baby strollers will not contemplate beyond their thoughts, thus ending up in regrets of selecting a wrong model. Most of baby strollers are now developed to serve convenience to parents, especially the act of transferring it to the vehicle or storing them in a closet as well as transporting them in hands.
